What Is Corrective Jaw Surgery?

Corrective jaw surgery—also known as orthognathic surgery—is a procedure designed to realign the upper and lower jaws when they do not meet properly. It’s often recommended when orthodontics alone cannot resolve bite issues, or when facial injuries, birth defects, or skeletal imbalances affect jaw function and aesthetics.

Why Might You Need Jaw Surgery?

When your jaws are misaligned, it can lead to more than just cosmetic concerns. Many patients seek jaw surgery to correct:

  • Difficulty biting, chewing, or swallowing
  • Speech issues
  • Receding or protruding jawlines
  • Inability to fully close the mouth
  • Excessive tooth wear or sensitivity
  • Sleep apnea or breathing difficulties

If you’ve experienced these issues, you may be a candidate for corrective jaw surgery. Dr. Kovach works closely with your orthodontist and other providers to develop a custom treatment plan just for you.

Our Surgical Process: What to Expect

Corrective jaw surgery is a collaborative, multi-step process that typically takes 18 to 24 months from planning to recovery. Here’s a general overview of the journey:

Your orthodontist will align your teeth to prepare for their new jaw position—typically with braces worn before and after surgery.

Dr. Kovach performs a thorough evaluation, including 3D Cone Beam CT scans, to create a precise surgical plan tailored to your condition.

Performed in the hospital under general anesthesia, the jaw is carefully repositioned and stabilized with biocompatible screws and plates. Depending on the procedure, you may go home the same day or stay overnight.

Initial recovery typically takes 1–2 weeks, with gradual healing over several months. A soft food diet is often recommended. You’ll receive detailed post-op care instructions, medications for pain management, and often non-opioid Exparel® for extended relief.
