What Is Facial Trauma?

Facial trauma refers to any injury affecting the face, jaw, or oral structures. These injuries may result from accidents, falls, sports-related impacts, or physical altercations. As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Kovach specializes in diagnosing and treating these injuries with precision and care.

Common Types of Facial Injuries We Treat

Dr. Kovach treats a wide range of facial trauma conditions, including:

  • Facial cuts and lacerations
  • Cheekbone, nasal, and other facial fractures
  • Fractured or dislocated jaws
  • Broken or knocked-out teeth (dental trauma)

Our Approach to Facial Trauma Treatment

Every injury is unique, and so is the treatment. Here’s how we manage different types of trauma:

Jaw Fractures

  • Jaw fractures can be treated in the operating room with plates and screws to restore function quickly.  They can also be treated more simply in the office by wiring the jaws to stabilize the bone while it heals much like a cast for other broken bones.
  • Treatment options may be influenced by the fracture position, patient condition, and several other factors.

Dental Injuries

  • For cracked or fractured teeth, we may stabilize the tooth with special bonding techniques or wires.
  • If a tooth has been knocked out, it’s crucial to act fast. If you bring the tooth to our office within 30 minutes, stored in saliva or milk, we may be able to reinsert and save it.

Facial Cuts and Lacerations

  • Dr. Kovach uses advanced suturing techniques to minimize visible scarring and promote ideal cosmetic healing—inside the mouth or on facial skin.

Facial Bone Fractures

  • Since casts can’t be used on the face, we stabilize fractures with tiny screws, plates, or wires placed under the skin.
  • These techniques ensure proper healing while maintaining your natural appearance as much as possible.
